The Ever Changing Media – Books

Books have been around for a very long time, centuries.  The first written word was on tablets and papyrus.  The ancient Egyptians started writing things down in 1800 BC.  They wrote on anything they could get their hands on.  Stone, clay, bark and metal sheets.  Wait what?  Metal sheets?  That’s according to Wikipedia

I just find the whole thing fascinating that it all started so long ago.

In the 5th century, the only people who actually read books were the clergy.  Books were so expensive to buy because they were all made with parchment and were hand written.

It’s interesting to know that the Arabs are who revolutionized book production.  They learned how to do it from the Chinese in the 8th century.  Because of them books were lighter and sewn with silk and bound with leather-covered paste boards, they had a flap that wrapped the book up when not in use.  Very nice.

So fast forward a bit… people start reading books because they are cheaper and it helps educate us with textbooks in schools.  I don’t care too much for history but more science fiction.

When you think of books you don’t think that it could be improved any more than it is.  That is until now.

Many don’t know about Project Gutenberg, well at least I didn’t.  There have been ebooks since 1971 and we didn’t even know about it.  So you may think that ebooks are new but apparently they aren’t that new.  What’s new is the ebook reader.  In 2006 Sony brings us the Sony Reader with e-ink.  I remember seeing it at Costco but it was VERY expensive.

Now instead of having to store all of your books on a shelf where they just end up collecting dust and the paper turns yellow, you can carry your entire book collection with you everywhere you go.

A lot of people hate the idea of an ebook reader.  They say that they like the smell of the leather but I mean really, they haven’t made leather-bound books in years so that argument doesn’t hold too much water with me.  When I bought the Harry Potter hardcover books they weren’t leather.  The hardcover is cardboard with what seems like fabric glued to it.  That’s it.  No leather.  And it has a paper lining which has the image on it.  When I was reading the hardcover Harry Potter books I had to remove that paper so I wouldn’t tear it.

I like the idea of an ebook reader mainly because of my carpel tunnel syndrome.  It’s very difficult for me to sit there and hold a heavy book when I could have a device sitting in front of me on its own stand (sold separately of course lol) and being able to push the next button to change the page.  It just makes sense to me.

Not only is it saving trees from being turned into books but also newspapers and magazines.  You read a newspaper and when you’re finished where does it go?  To the trash can.  You read a magazine and when you’re finished where does it go?  To the trash can.  All that money going right in to the trash can.  eNewspapers and eMagazines are so much cheaper as well as ebooks.

So now that we’ve gone from writing on stone, clay, bark, metal sheets and papyrus to leather bound books to what we now know today with paper back books and now ebook readers, what’s next?  You didn’t think they could possibly improve on the book but they have but is that all they are going to do with it?  What’s going to be the next wave of reading books?  I’m very curious to know.

I just thought that I would add that I don’t have ALL the facts, this is just my commentary.  If you have a correction or something to add please feel free to leave a comment.

  1. I’m having a little bit of trouble viewing your site in Chrome, but it may just be my computer. Apart from that, I love your site. I plan on browsing around and checking out some more posts!
  2. I’ve been hearing that a lot from people about Chrome but I’ve been using Google Chrome for quite some time and I haven’t had any issues yet so far with both my desktop and my laptop. The only thing I can suggest is to click the little wrench in the top right of your browser, click Options, click Clear Browsing Data then check Empty the Cache but uncheck all the rest and then click Clear Browsing Data. Then close your browser, bring it back up and reload my blog and see if that works. Hopefully that will help.

Hi – really good website you have made. I enjoyed reading this posting. I did want to issue a comment to tell you that the design of this site is very aesthetically sweet. I used to be a graphic designer, now I am a copy editor in chief for a merchandising firm. I have always enjoyed working with computers and am attempting to learn computer code in my spare time (which there is never enough of lol).

Solid blog. I got a lot of effective info. I’ve been following this technology for awhile. It’s intriguing how it keeps changing, yet some of the core components remain the same. Have you seen much change since Google made their latest acquisition in the field?

Hey I just wanted to let you know, I actually like the piece of writing on your web site. But I am utilising Chromium on a machine running version 9.10 of Ubuntu and the UI aren’t quite correct. Not a big deal, I can still basically read the articles and research for info, but just wanted to inform you about that. The navigation bar is kind of hard to use with the config I’m running. Keep up the great work!

  11. Apple has just released Ipad with competitive pricing and seemingly better features for their entry level model. Do you think this will affect the Kindle DX market? Many Thanks :)
  12. That’s a very good question. Personally I think that if somebody wants a Amazon Kindle DX it’s because they want an e-book reader with e-ink for reading books and newspapers. The only way I would use an iPad for reading is if I’m reading a website. There is no way that you can sit there for hours reading a e-book or newspaper on an iPad and not ruin your eyes because of the screen. Kindles e-ink is easier on the eyes.

Now on the other hand, I can see a person buying an iPad for the different applications that they have for it which is like an iPhone. But I definitely do not see the iPad taking over the e-book world.

  13. Hey I am having issues searching for used Ipads. Any advice on a great website to purchase ??
  14. Used iPads? Are you mad? They haven’t even come out yet lol. They don’t go on sale until April 3rd for Christ sake. You’re going to have to wait for at least a year before someone makes the decision to sell it as used which will probably be a very cold day in hell. So good luck with that, hope you are fruitful in your endeavors. Used iPad… lol

  16. That rss option on your website here is brilliant, you should tell more folks about it in your next post. I haven’t noticed it for the first couple of times, now I’m using it each morning to check on any updates. I’m on a real slow dial-up connection in Ohio and it’s rather frustrating to sit there and wait for such a long time ’til the page loads… but hey, I just found your rss page and added it to the Google Reader and voil? – I’m always up-to-date! Well buddy, keep up the good work and make that rss button a little bigger so that other people can enjoy that as well :-P
  17. Your site is one of my favorite blogs I’ve ever seen so far and man , I tell ya , I’ve seen a lot of great informational blogs. I’m glad that i found such great news here. Keep up the good work dude.
